How document translation works

Use the InDesign IDML translator in your browser. No installation or signup is required for the free demo.

Step 1

Choose the target language

Choose English or another supported language from the picker. The source language is detected from the document's text.

Step 2

Upload your IDML file

Export the document as .idml from your authoring application and upload that file. Native .indd files are not accepted by this uploader.

Step 3

Download and review the result

Open the translated IDML in InDesign and inspect overset text, line breaks, fonts, linked assets, and page layout before producing a final PDF.

About document translation and JotMe

JotMe combines purpose-built translation and transcription tools with a broader system for multilingual teams to capture, understand, and act on conversations.

About the document translation tool

JotMe document translation is special because it keeps your file format while translating the content. Upload a PDF, Word, PowerPoint, or Excel file and download a translated document ready to share.

About JotMe

JotMe is special because multilingual operations include written files too. Document translation helps teams move contracts, decks, and reports across languages without rebuilding the document from scratch.

When to use IDML translation

Start with a representative file, review the language and structure, and test the result in the application where it will be used.

Draft multilingual brochures

Translate the readable text in an IDML export, then let the designer adjust text frames and spacing for the translated copy.

Review product and sales materials

Check product names, specifications, prices, and claims in their visual context. The language review and layout review are separate steps.

Plan for longer text

Translated copy may need more room than the original. Check overset text and font coverage, especially when moving between scripts.

Keep the design source

Retain the original document and assets. A translated export is a starting point for layout review, not a guarantee of press-ready output.

Use cases

Use document translation to turn PDFs, Word files, decks, and spreadsheets into another language.

Contracts & reports

Translate contracts and reports without rebuilding the document.

Decks & presentations

Localize slide decks for stakeholders who work in another language.

Spreadsheets

Turn spreadsheet labels and notes into clear translations for cross-border teams.

Handouts & forms

Translate PDFs and forms for travel, HR, and customer ops.

FAQ

Can I upload an INDD file?

No. Export the document as IDML and upload the .idml file. Renaming an INDD file does not convert it.

Will translated copy fit every text frame?

Not necessarily. Translations can expand, and different scripts may need other fonts or spacing. Review overset text and page layout in InDesign.

Does this translate text inside linked images?

Do not assume text embedded in linked image assets is included. Review those assets separately and use image translation for a readable picture when needed.

How do I translate a IDML file to English?

Select English in the target-language picker, upload the supported file, and choose Translate document. Download the translated file and review its text and structure before using it.

How large can the document be?

The uploader checks file size and text length and lets you know if your document exceeds the supported limits. Use a smaller excerpt if needed.

Does this translate my whole project?

This uploader processes one file. It does not connect to a repository, import an entire project, update your website, or publish the translated result. Download the file and review it in your own workflow.

Is the document translator free?

Try document translation for free without signing up. Upload a supported file, choose your target language, and download the translation for review.
